About

The National Family Court Survey seeks to better understand how custody cases impact the economic stability and overall well-being of families. This research focuses on individuals who have been involved in a family court custody case within the past five years while caring for a child under 18.

The study explores a wide range of experiences, including financial strain related to legal representation and court involvement, as well as broader effects on family life such as stress, access to basic needs, employment disruptions, and long-term stability. By capturing these lived experiences, the survey aims to identify patterns of socioeconomic impact and highlight opportunities for more supportive, effective court processes.

Ultimately, this research will generate data to help inform decision-makers, improve family court systems, and develop solutions that better support families navigating custody cases. It also addresses a critical gap, as there is currently no coordinated national effort to document the full impact of family court involvement, particularly in prolonged custody litigation.

Current Stage

The survey is currently in its final development stages, with submission for Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval underway.
